My Favourite Art Quotes

Recently, I finished my Master’s degree program and now I am back home, doing my own things. My final few months, writing my dissertation, really drained me. I have never felt more disheartened by something I have been working very hard on for weeks.

Once home, I really wanted to find things that would inspire me. I went on Pinterest to find some nice art quotes to make me feel inspired again. Art really helps me think out of the box, I always feel like when you have a dream away from the norm it feels something absolutely surreal and the path towards that point also feels extremely crooked. But that makes you analyse that path again and again, until you reach a decision on how you should tackle it in your own way. Everyone’s different and everyone has their ways, what we choose to do can have a butterfly effect in our lives. Maybe another me from a parallel universe is the opposite, who knows. A paradox.

Anyway, I just wanted to share some quotes that I pinned and what my perspective towards that it.

  • “If you hear a voice within you say ‘you cannot paint,’ then by all means paint, and that voice will be silenced.”
    – Vincent Van Gogh

This reminded of the time when I was in primary school and I wasn’t very good at art but I definitely enjoyed it, even then. I think it was the day we had an art exam or something and we had been given a picnic theme to draw on. I vaguely remember that I drew a family eating a really nice lunch under a tree and was pretty proud of that work. My friends had also drawn really pretty portraits. Although, when I saw the art done by one of my classmates, who was the best painter, I felt that if I can never get as good as her, I should just leave art. And sadly, I did. I think that is a horrible way to look at things, I can’t even blame my younger self because I wasn’t even ten years old, what would I know. Telling myself that I can do better, once I got older, is something I wish I had done very long ago. Things would’ve been very different right now.

  • “Every artist was first an amateur.”
    – Ralph Waldo Emerson

The second quote is something every new artist should hear. Its hard to stay motivated when you first start out. We all see so many amazing artists all around us. We look at their best work, try to replicate it and it ends badly. The truth will always be that they worked really hard consistently to get where they are in their work. It is evident when they post a before vs after post and you see how amazing they have become through their personal discipline to get better at something they love. Once we start growing more and more, we’ll be able to discover another self within us that will inspire another generation of amazing artists. But for us to see people like that, we gotta make our way and define ourselves, our work, our purpose.

  • “Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.”
    – Pablo Picasso

I think this is something everyone can agree with. We are definitely more imaginative and creative when we are younger. Every instance of looking at things in a different way can be deemed as crazy and you can be taught to think in a way that people have been thinking for years. What a lot of schools do, they try to eliminate free thinking or push an idealistic idea on us and try to model us in a similar way. Creating their idea of an ideal citizen of that particular society and how they should act. I disagree, it is a lot more important to be in harmony with your true self and chase the dreams that truly make you happy rather than finding something because it is a safer option. When we are given a set of options to choose from, not many will discard all and reach for something outside. I know that because I have taken the decision of choosing something that I thought was the safer option, something that everyone does, only to feel absolutely miserable. But I think I have learned from my mistakes and I don’t think its ever going to be too late to pursue what you truly want to. Keep chasing what you are meant to do. I want to and if there is someone out there like me, I wish they would do the same. We can all support each other because we are never alone in our dreams.

I have more quotes that I really like, I might do a part 2 of this sometime! (^_^)
